Reasons you will love this creamy pasta dish

This is one of the best pasta and kielbasa recipes to make for a few simple reasons

  • Requires few ingredients
  • Is hearty, filling, and very satisfying
  • Easy to make, and ready quickly
  • Loved by kids and adults alike

Ingredients needed for cheesy kielbasa pasta

Pasta - choose your favorite. I like rotini because it has lots of crevices for the sauce to stick, but bowties and penne are both good options.

Kielbasa - this is the star of the dish! Use your favorite kielbasa.

Veggies - I like onions and green peppers; dice them into bite sized pieces.

Butter - adds a richness to the sauce

Flour - thickens the sauce

Seasonings - cajun, oregano, salt and pepper are all you need for this pasta dish

Chicken broth - for the sauce, I like to use reduced sodium chicken broth

Heavy cream - this makes the sauce nice and creamy

Cheese - a blend of parmesan cheese and white cheddar matches the flavors perfectly

Recipe adaptations and substitutions

Want to change it up? You can try

  • Use a different kind of cheese. For added spice try a tex mex blend or grated pepper jack. You can also substitute white cheddar with sharp yellow cheddar. Try serving with additional cheddar on top for an extra cheesy treat!
  • Switch up the veggies! I like to use a blend of onions and peppers, but broccoli, zucchini, and even peas would be delicious additions. Do not do more than 3 cups total of diced veggies.
  • Use your favorite pasta! Any type you have in your cupboard will work great. I like to use a variety that has lots of nooks and crannies to catch all the delicious sauce, but you can use your favorite noodle.
  • The cajun flavor in this is subtle, for more spice increase the cajun seasoning to 1 teaspoon or more depending on your preference.

What is the difference between kielbasa and kolbassa

Kielbasa and kolbassa are different names for the same type of smoked Polish sausage traditionally flavored with garlic and sometimes marjoram. It is typically spelled kielbasa, but sometimes you may see it in stores labeled as kolbassa. It is usually made out of pork but there are also sometimes other variations such as turkey and beef. For this recipe I used regular pork kielbasa.

What is the best kind of pan to use for this cheesy kielbasa pasta dish

Any large (12” or more), deep skillet will work wonderfully for this recipe. If you don't have that you can also use a large pot. I love my Le Creuset enameled cast iron skillets for dishes such as this, but a stainless steel or nonstick skillet would work well too.

What to serve with this cheesy kielbasa pasta

This creamy kielbasa pasta is hearty enough to be a meal on its own, however I love to pair it with a fresh green salad and some warm crusty bread.

Storage and reheating instructions

This meal lasts up to three days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Leftovers can be frozen but the pasta will have a mushy texture when reheated. To reheat simply microwave the pasta for 1 minute, then in 30 second increments, stirring in between each.
